Fifteen years ago when I left Honeywell and the Big City to live in the Northwoods, one of my group gave me a parting gift of a book called 'Country Wisdom and Know-How'. It's an oversized, non-glossy, all paper book w/ chapters on gardening, foraging, quilting, canning, building chicken coops, health, animal husbandry, restoring hard wood floors, etc. I referred to it the first years here before I got back into the rhythm of living in the country. My cousin and his wife retired in 2020, sold their home near Los Angeles and moved at the beginning of this year to a cabin in Montana. They are pretty excited about it all. However that's a lot of changes in a short amount of time so today I boxed up my beloved book on rural living and shipped it off to their new address w/ a card. I explained where the book came from (that's why some of the pages are dog-eared) and hoped it would help them w/ the transition into their new surroundings. Yes, it's easy to get all of the same information by doing a Google search. Though a book is nice to have around when the electricity goes out and you can't access the Internet -or- when you need to start a fire -or- when there is no toilet paper left.
