White Birch on the hill

Friends of the Library meeting tonight.  The meeting was inside the library since it's too cold to do it outside in the parking lot.  It started out a bit bleak - how could we manage a book sale in November and our traditional children's pictures on Santa's knee at Christmas was out of the question.  Then someone suggested for Christmas we could make up bags of goodies to hand out to children.  Someone else said if we had their parents call to reserve a bag for their kid, we could find out the age of the child and have appropriate reading level books in the bags along w/ a toy and candy.  Another person suggested to decorate the bag we could stencil a Christmas picture on the front of the bag for the kids to color later. Well, if a "to-go" bag would work for Christmas, why not try something similar for the book sale?  People could call and request a genre (like Westerns or History) or author and the volunteers would fill a paper bag w/ books for them to pick up at a later time.  We'd call it a 'grab bag' meaning they were getting books sight-unseen but a bargain at $2 for a paper bag filled w/ books.  Someone else said they would try to have the newspaper interview the librarian about how the sale would work and we could get publicity for the sale.  Instead of just having the usual one day sale, we would stretch it out to all week.  The thoughts & ideas flowed and, I think, everyone was pretty up-beat by the time the meeting adjourned.
