2000 - Exploring the Solar System

This is the first hexagon stamp issued by the U.S. Postal Service.  Special perforating dies were molded to give these stamps their unique look.  Each stamp represents a different aspect of the sun - total eclipse, artist's rendition of a cross-section of the sun, NASA photo of sunrise from the moon, a solar eruption, and the sun as it appears from Earth.  Each was a $1 stamp.  I doubt if you ever saw one of these on a piece of mail - mostly just another way for the USPS to make money off collectors.  First day of issue was July 11, 2000 in Anaheim, California.   1.7 million were printed.  Scott # 3410

Venus is very bright in our southern sky. Is this the closest the planet gets to earth?
