Bugs Bunny stamp

This is the first U.S. stamp to depict a cartoon character.  The Postal Service did the Looney Tune series, at least in part, to entice younger people to start collecting stamps.  Maybe it worked since the Bugs Bunny stamp is listed as the 7th most popular U.S. collectible stamp.  Robert McKimson created the Bugs Bunny design and Mel Blanc gave it a voice starting back in 1940.  World War II began soon afterward and, besides 'acting', Bugs was kept busy promoting buying war bonds.  This stamp was first released on May 22, 1997 in Burbank, California. 37.8 million were printed.  Scott # 3137.
