1997 - Classic American Aircraft
American Aircraft was the 5th issued in the postal services 'Classic Collection' series of stamps. There are 20 different stamps w/ a bonus of 2 other planes printed on the banner of the sheet. Just as w/ the Insect and Spider stamps, the back of these stamps include a description of the aircraft pictured. These stamps were printed to celebrate the first 50 years of American aviation. The planes pictured represent American aircraft manufacturers - Martin, Boeing, Beech, Lockheed, Piper, Northrup - and famous planes - the Wright flyer, Amelia Earhart's Vega, and WWII Corsair. The first day of issue for these stamps was July 19, 1997 in Dayton, Ohio. 161 million were printed. Scott # 3142
