Plane

Have a new 'fly' mystery.   Sat down for breakfast and saw a plane skimming  at the tops of the trees on the other side of the swamp.  Ran out and took a few pictures.  The engine didn't sound like it was straining but if the plane went down a picture might help identify what went wrong.  The plane made a low pass, looped up, and came back down for another pass.  No.  Didn't look like the plane was in trouble.  However, what was the pilot up to?  I went back inside but before long I heard it again, making similar passes to the southwest.  Then on my way into town. saw the plane again making passes over a field near town.  I asked the Coffee and Conversation group if they knew what the plane was up to.  They didn't know but that didn't stop them from guessing.  (1) Spraying for Gypsy moths.   That's a springtime activity and our county wasn't in the plan for this year. (2) Looking for bear.  Bear sometimes settle into the middle of a corn field and dig a den for the winter.  Could be but wouldn't need to get that low nor make multiple passes to spot bear.  (3) Spotting marijuana fields.  Sometimes marijuana is planted in the middle of a taller crop so it is camouflaged.  However, it makes more sense to take a picture of the field from higher up and have evidence before police made a bust.  (4) Crop Dusting.  Practitioners prefer to be called Aerial Applicators now days.  It's too late in the season to be killing insects/weeds or applying fertilizer.  (5) Applying Glyphosate.  That's a possibility.  It desiccates plants and can be applied just before harvest - especially in wet years.  (6) Seeding winter rye/wheat.  That's a possibility too.  Only problem w/ options 5 & 6 is it was a very windy day.  I had to go out to rehang a shirt and pants that had blown off the clothesline. The pilot might have been applying material to a field but a fair amount of it probably settled elsewhere.   Anyway, the sheriff and deputies converged at a residence to the west of me.  The plane pilot reported someone there had pointed a gun at the plane.  Details should be in the Sheriff's Report in the paper next week.
