Balsam cones

Monday was State Fair.  Temps were in the low 70's.  Started off w/ a strawberry cream puff.  Walked up to the DNR building to see some exhibits and check out the fish and ducks in the ponds.  From there headed up to Creative Arts  On the way passed the Democrat tent so stopped in to 'vote' w/ a bean for my choice of candidate.  After checking out the quilts and preserves we walked up to Fine Arts.  Always a thought provoking stop.   On through the Eco building and the Pet building.  Stopped off at the Grand Stand to make some purchases.   It was getting close to noon by now and just beginning to sprinkle.  The forecast afternoon rainstorms had worked to our advantage in keeping the crowds away.  We'd planned for the storms though and before they hit we were sitting inside the Coliseum watching the six-horse hitch competition - judged in heats of 4 teams.  At the end all of the teams managed to be brought onto the Coliseum floor: 138 draft horses along w/ the 23 wagons and drivers.  Pretty impressive.  By the time the winner was announced the worst of the storm outside was over.  Sat outside the dairy building critiquing the technique of the people demoing how to milk a cow (maybe I should volunteer next year at the Fair as a milker?) and then wandered through more animal buildings.  Ate our way back to the bus pickup around 4 p.m.  One of the more relaxed days at the Fair.
