For the library's Summer Reading Program this week, Prof. Hendrickson from the Physics and Astronomy department at the University gave a talk. The library shares half of a building w/ the Village Town Hall. The Village graciously allowed us to use their auditorium for his talk. He entertained both children and parents alike w/ experiments showing how two dissimilar metals can make a thermometer, blowing the caps off bottles, and using liquid nitrogen to freeze flower petals. Doubt the little kids understood much of what he was explaining but they sat entranced and the parents came out talking about the 'show' he'd put on.
It was lucky they were all in another room. The kids have been reading lots of books and I had stacks and stacks on the desk that they had returned. Checked in the books, put the ones going to other libraries in the bins and shelved the ones staying in-house. Much easier when there was no one around except two ladies reading magazines in one corner. (Think they were waiting for someone.) Had just finished putting the last books away when the kids came pouring back into the library. Then I was busy checking out the new books they were picking up to read this week. We stayed open an extra half hour to get everyone processed out. Hopefully the kids will continue to come to the library even after the program finishes. "Next year" the leader said, "I'm thinking of an Adult Summer Reading Program." Might be fun at that.
