Orchard Oriole (Immature male)
Overcast but the constant rain of yesterday had stopped. The last errand for the morning was to pick up the flowers from the cemetery. They will spend the rest of the summer on the deck. Phil's cut lilacs in the Mason jar still looked good so I recut the stems and set them on my kitchen counter. Indy and I walked the far hay field checking for yellow rocket. It's a flower that Dad always sent us kids out to pull every spring and I still do it. Found only ten plants. Either my vigilance is paying off or I'm looking too early. Will check the field again in a week. Tonight this little bird visited the jelly feeder. Didn't recognize it. Found it in the Sibley's Bird Book which indicated my area is just north of it's usual range. I keep an annual list of flora/fauna I've never seen before - now I have my first 'new' bird for the year.
