I made a cheese souffle for breakfast. Had just sat down when I saw an oriole sitting on a shepherds hook by the deck. So I got up, went to where I stored the bird feeders last fall, got out some blackberry jam, filled up the container and hung it out on the hook. Sat back down to finish breakfast. The oriole didn't come back but a hummingbird checked out the jam. I finished the souffle, boiled up some sugar water, got out two of the hummingbird feeders, and put those out on hooks. It's common lore that the hummers come back on Mother's Day. I usually assume that's an approximation - give or take a week. This year they were right on the dot. Will have to wait to get a pic of the hummer and oriole but on the walk heard this thrasher singing it's whole repertoire.
