These are examples of bas-relief sculptures - where the form projects from the surrounding surface but is not undercut. You have an example of this in your purse/wallet. Coins have bas-relief engravings of buildings, busts, and lately national parks. My freshman Art and Music Appreciation teacher taught us the pronunciation of 'ba-relief' but 'bas-' is also an acceptable alternative. The term comes from the French where bas means low.
