The word 'badger' is an English word first noted in the early 1500's. The animal probably got this name because of the white streak down it's head. It was the animal w/ a 'badge'. I've seen and heard a badger which was not happy because the dog was barking at it and it was cornered. I think it got it's name from the sound it made - a bad 'grrr'.
