Stopped on my way back home next to this orchard. Each tree looked like it had one bright red apple still hanging on a branch. They aren't real but are sticky traps for apple maggots. The adult female is attracted to any red spherical object in which to lay her eggs. Since these fake apples are available well before any real apple ripens, they will ensnare most of these little flies and thus save the rest of the crop. Quite the system - now all we need is Spring.
