Maximilian's Sunflower (Helianthus maximilianii)
I was mowing the paths when I came up on one of the bluebird houses. There was a bluebird standing atop it. I haven't seen a bluebird in some weeks but I resisted taking the nest boxes down. Usually the bluebirds will collect around them in late summer/early fall. Maybe they make plans to meet up there. After all, it will be the first flight south for the youngsters. Maybe they've been spending their time further north and they stop off to rest at a familiar spot as the migrate back south. Maybe they want to tell the face that looked into the nest box once a week, "Thanks for not eating us." Whatever the reason, I wish them a good trip and hope they choose my houses next year.
