Common Nighthawk (Chordeiles minor)

Was just walking out of the backdoor.  I had a dog treat in one hand and the ramp under the other arm.  Indy and I were going to do another short training session outside against the deck.  I noticed a lot of swallows swooping and diving.  Then it hit me - these weren't swallows but nighthawks!  I've only seen them a few times as they migrate past and not at all in the last couple of years.  Here was a whole group of them feeding over the meadow.  I threw the treat up in the air (never heard it hit so assume Indy took care of that), dropped the ramp, and turned for my camera.  Even w/ the birds swarming around getting a focus on one bird was near impossible.  They fly fast and erratically.  These birds are members of the 'goatsucker' family of birds.  The name comes from an ancient belief that the birds came in the night and sucked on the teats of goats.  Somehow comforting to realize that people would believe idiotic balderdash even before the invention of social media.
