Red Oak leaves

Last week I overheard a conversation between two people discussing volunteers.  "If you want get something done," the first lady said,"look for someone who is already doing a lot."  I suspect there's truth in that.  However it is also a grand way of wearing thin the good graces of the very people you are dependent on.  (It's the same when you give money to a charity.  Throughout the year the charity will continue to send pleading requests for even more money.)  Of course, pushing existing volunteers to do most of the work is short range thinking.  The long range object is to spend more time on building a larger base of volunteers.  It adds to the viability of the organization, the vitality of the workers, and the versatility caused by multiple ideas.  So volunteers should sometimes say "No"  - and rationalize that it is for the greater good.
