Halloween Tree

I listened to a radio call-in program that was concerning opening up part of a state forest north of me to All Terrain Vehicles (ATV) traffic.  The first several calls were from people in that area and were definitely hostile to the idea.  They said the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) had been trying to force this down their throats for awhile.  They didn't want ATVs ripping up the forest floor, chasing down animals, being washed off in ponds and creeks, leaving garbage, and making a lot of noise. The DNR spokesperson on the show actually got a bit heated.  He said most riders follow the rules and the ATV clubs do their best to police the trails.  Then he basically said it was going to happen and they wanted feedback on the best way to incorporate it.  I don't own an ATV.  I prefer walking the countryside.  ATV's are useful tools but I don't get using them for recreation. (For reference, I also don't understand the fascination  people have w/ golf, basketball, or football).    I will say when Indy and I went out for our after-dark walk it was wonderfully silent.  The only sounds were owls hooting back and forth in the trees.  Hard to hear the quiet if you are riding an ATV.

The Wisc. DNR must be related to the Ind. DNR. They are a law unto themselves. A DNR person told our lake association we had better "get on board" or they were going to drain our lake. Really? Might be difficult to drain an 800 acre lake.
