Cotton grass
Heard that the courts will allow the local Native American tribes to do a night-time deer hunt in the ceded lands of the Northwoods. Sounded like an incredibly stupid idea but I looked into it further. Listened to a tribal leader explain that the state was constantly creating specialized hunting seasons - youth, t-zone, archery, musket, etc. so why couldn't the tribes make up their own? The tribes require all applicants prove their marksmanship by shooting at a target at night and hitting the bulls-eye 8 out of 10 times plus submit a written plan of where/when they will be hunting which includes the topography of the land and denotes buildings/roads within a mile. Also keep in mind that last year the state started allowing night-time hunts for wolf, coyote, and raccoon to any hunter. The tribal leader was asked if he thought there would be a backlash as there was in the 70's when the tribes were allowed to spearfish walleye. "No," he replied, "people are more educated on the facts these days." I wasn't so sure so I went to some on-line hunt sites. From the uninformed, vulgar, and vicious comments I'm thinking the tribal leader was giving non-native hunters way too much credit.
