Hooded Merganser
I think I ran over a little ground squirrel today. It came out quickly from the side and I hoped it would stop before it got too far into the road. I even swerved a little just in case but when I looked in the rear view mirror it seemed to me there was a little lump in the road. Made me think about a recent edict from the Minnesota state police - "drivers are not to brake hard or swerve for wildlife - even ducklings - on the freeways." Easier to say than do. I'm guessing that means the state police have given up on motorists keeping enough distance between cars so if the car in front of you suddenly brakes - say to avoid another car, debris in the road, or a person - you won't hit them. Me ... I'll always brake for wildlife, especially deer ... for all the good that's done me.
