American Goldfinch eyeing a Common Yellowthroat
A quiet morning at the library. The only people who came in either wanted a map of the garage sales in the area or to use the bathroom. Just before the library was to close a man came up to my desk. "I don't think you can help me but I'd like to talk to someone about burying my mother. There is a hole at the cemetery but no one is around." After a few questions I understood the situation. The cemetery, I knew, was administered by the village. I looked up their contact information but only office phone numbers were listed for the chairman, supervisors, and clerk. However, the clerk happened to be on the list of people having a garage sale today. I gave the gentleman the garage sale map and explained which site was hers. He had the option of waiting at the cemetery for someone to show up to close the grave and/or driving about a mile to the clerk's home to check on what the village had planned for the burial. Librarians (even volunteer ones) are hard-wired to at least try to answer any question given to them.
