Outside Commode

It was 14 degrees below zero this morning when I got to work. No post dipping the cows nor spraying feet for warts when it gets this cold. To top things off, milking unit #2 wouldn't work correctly. There is a diaphragm in each unit that lets the milk fill up a small container until it reaches about a third of a pound and then dumps it into the pipeline leading to the storage tank. This unit's diaphragm was "swamped" and just directly dumped the milk into the pipeline. The system doesn't realize the cow has given any milk at all and in one minute automatically drops off the cow. Domingo and I got through milking by putting that unit on "manual" which means it won't come off until we take it off the manual setting. One more thing for us to remember. This problem did have a silver lining though. The dairy owner's took the unit apart but couldn't fix it so the maintenance company was called. They said they would send a rep out around 9:30 a.m. This is Thursday and around 9:30 a.m., Domingo and I would be spraying foam all over in the parlor. So the owners said we could put off cleaning until tomorrow. I was jubilant. Never do today what can be put off 'til tomorrow.
