Wood Anemone

I was volunteering at the library this morning when a woman breezed in. She said her family was staying in town for the season and she was a voracious reader. She'd like to check out some videos and books today. I gave her a library card application. As she filled out the card, she said she was from San Francisco but had graduated from the local high school. I said I too had grown up here, worked in the Big City, and recently moved back to the area. "Oh, do you remember me?" she asked. "I was Sharon (Petra-something or other, I don't remember)." "No, sorry." I replied. "Well, you're much younger than me. What's your maiden name." She queried. "Susan Mayer," I said. "I know you!" she gasped, "You were just a year behind me in school." As I busied myself entering her info into the system, she started looking through the videos. Every so often she would turn my way and say things like "I was a cheerleader." and "I was valedictorian." She seemed concerned that I didn't remember her. My forgetfulness didn't bother me - my focus was on that she thought I looked so much younger.
