New Calf Barn: Checking out a post hole
Volunteered at the library today. A lady came to the desk and asked if I had any suggestions on a good mystery series. I showed her the Joanne Fluke books - they take place in a mythical small town in the North Woods and include recipes which are part of the storyline. The lady liked the idea of a culinary mystery and walked off w/ two books. A little old lady, leaning heavily on her cane, said she wanted to read a book called "Savage Harvest". I looked it up. "The one about cannibals?" I asked. "Yes," she brightened, "that's the one." I ordered it for her and said there were 2 people ahead of her. "Just give me a call when it comes in." she said as she tottered off. Another lady came to the desk. She had DVDs on the hold shelf, she wanted to use the computer, and also wanted to pay a portion of her fine. She plopped down $5 toward her $13 in fines. I told her to go ahead and sit at a computer. I would check out her DVD's and bring them over to her. Easier said than done. Two DVD's scanned in but the system said the third was already checked out to her two days ago. Couldn't be - I was holding it in my hand. I overrode the system so all three DVD's would be due back at the same time and took them to her. I asked her if she had checked them out before. No she hadn't but she tried to a couple of days ago. She said the person at the desk explained until her fines were under $10 she couldn't use library resources. It all became clear to me. The other volunteer had scanned in one of the DVDs before noticing the fine level. Instead of backing out the transaction, she had closed the screen and the DVD status was updated to "checked out". You know, I think I'm finally getting pretty good at this library gig.
