The next day after the bear wrecked the bird house, I got a purse size container of pepper spray. It will work against a bear but the bear needs to be within 7 feet. Rather close but I felt better knowing I had a back-up plan if we encountered a bruin who wanted to fight rather than run. Today, I picked up a bigger bottle. This one sprays up to 30 feet away and I can use it multiple times. It even comes w/ a holster that I can wear on my belt. Maybe I'll practice my "quick draw" a few times before taking into the woods.
