Devil Cholla

A picture from my brother, Phil.

Colder today than yesterday and tomorrow will be colder still.   We haven't used any post-dip on the cows for a couple of days now.  Want their teats to be as dry as possible as they walk back to their nice snug stalls in the barn.  The cows don't seem to mind the cold and most were giving around 40 lbs of milk this morning. Machinery isn't as forgiving of frigid temps though - the crowd gate will get a build up of ice and start slipping, the automatic milk line cleaning system sometimes fails to clean the milkers, and once in awhile the vacuum pump won't start.  Fortunately, these problems have been easy to recognize quickly and fix/work around.  Could be worse - the overhead heating system could fail.
