Ragged Fringed Orchid

I consider finding orchids the Holy Grail of native flowers. I've looked over and over at the pictures of the kinds that grow in the Northwoods so, when I saw this little spike blooming in the tall grass meadow, I was pretty sure I had one. Now, it's not like orchids, in general, are that rare. There are about 20,000 species. But most of them grow in the tropics and wherever they occur, they are rarely dominant. I'm always surprised to find that every year there are a few more plants I identify that I never knew grew here - extra special when it's an orchid.
