Sphagnum moss

Walked through the peat bog today. It's a strange place of tussocks covered in soft, spongy sphagnum moss. Perpetually wet, the standing water gives off a fetid smell - even this early in the season. Holes here and there make you think that you are just walking on top of a underground maze of tunnels. Needless to say, there isn't any good trail through the place and I tripped over a downed branch falling to my knees. So a bit of the malodorous mire went w/ me on the rest of the walk. Guess I'll be doing laundry tonight.
