5 cows were dried off this morning. We stop milking a cow a couple of months before she is due to have a calf. After the last milking, the herdsman treats her teats w/ a cream to close them temporarily and vaccinates her w/ a shot in the neck. Then she is gets a little vacation until her calf is born. The herdsman came back into the milking pit shaking his hand - he had missed on the last cow and poked his hand w/ the vaccination needle. My eyes grew wide. There isn't anything in the vaccination that would hurt a human but the dosage is for an animal that weighs a ton! He laughed and said he hadn't hit the plunger so he only got whatever amount was on the tip of the needle. "And now," he said, "I'm vaccinated against mastitis."
