I remember reading the White House floral designer (yep, there is such a job) needlepointed a pillow for first lady Mrs. Reagan that said "Peonies bloom in May". Seems Mrs. Reagan liked peonies so much that she was always suggesting they be added to arrangements - even when they were out of season. Here in the Northwoods, my peonies are just beginning to bloom. I like peonies also: they have a pretty scent, the bloom is showy, they thrive on neglect. Grandma would sometimes add them to her Memorial Day bouquets. I don't know how she got them to bloom in time but I've noticed the older the plant, the earlier it emerges after the frost goes out. Maybe my plants just aren't old enough yet to bloom in May.
