Deer at the Salt Lick
All of the peonies have emerged now and are growing fast. I can attest that a week of temps down to 20 degrees F has no affect on tender young peony shoots. I needn't have been concerned about the lilacs either - they just stopped growing during the cold weather and now are back to leafing out in earnest. This morning's project was to label boxes for Mjolnir. That meant walking back and forth so I left Mjolnir's garage door open. The next time I went in a little fox sparrow was frantically trying to find it's way out. For whatever reason it didn't use the gaping garage door (too brightly lit?) and instead knocked it's head into one of the small windows in the garage. I quietly edged into the building thinking the bird would go the opposite direction and out the door. No. It again smacked head on into a window and tumbled to the floor. It shuddered a bit before stilling. Not dead though. It's eye still looked bright. Draped a hand towel over the bird and carefully gathered it up around the body. Placed it outside the door in the shade and removed the towel. After a moment the bird righted itself and after another minute took off to perch atop the dog run. This afternoon's activity was to work on pots for Memorial Day. Have three pots of flowers ready - hope they stay blooming for another three weeks. Two more to go.
