Gorgeous Gorge - May
Only thing on my schedule for the day was library volunteer training. The librarian provides pizzas, chips, and coffee as an incentive for attendance. This month's discussion was on how to handle lost library items (like books, DVD's, CD's). As it happened, the night before a book had shown up on the 'pull list' (i.e. one of our library's books is requested by another library) and the volunteer couldn't find it on the shelf. We all checked one more time for it and then watched as the librarian went on the computer system. She cancelled the original request for our book, labeled that book as 'Missing', and entered a new request for the book which went to another library for that book. Now if we find the book that is probably misshelved somewhere in the library we can change it's label to 'Available' or, if not found, delete the reference to it. Serendipitously, I was having an issue w/ a DVD I'd ordered two months ago from another library. As we all watched, the librarian verified that the computer system did have my request and that it was created early December, that the library where the DVD is located has it listed as 'Available' but hasn't fulfilled the request. The librarian said it was probably a case of that library not going through the proper procedures for a missing item. She was able to walk us through the procedure once again on how to cancel a request and create a new one. Only thing she couldn't do was mark another library's item as 'Missing'. Can't fault the other library too much. They had a window break during a storm and a section of their library was drenched in water. After all of that, mistakes could have happened.
