A spot in the sun

Public Test for the next election today.  We poll workers treat it as a set-up and trial run for Election Day.  No one from the public ever attends - until today.  Two of the town supervisors happened to be at the town hall this morning working on resetting cameras and the router.  Since they were on-site, we had them fill out ballots too for the test.  The test went very smoothly and I'm feeling good about this upcoming election.  We have three different ballots since our town was split into three wards (an incredibly vapid move by the county) after the last census.  Poll workers will need to be careful that each person gets the correct ballot.  I made a call to the county clerk saying we needed a map of our town indicating each ward.  The poll books are pre-printed w/ each registered person's ward.  In our state, though, a person can register at the polls and vote.  It would take a bit of detective work to figure out which ward they live in w/o a map.  More importantly, we need a map in order to explain to suspicious people why they aren't getting the same ballot as their neighbor.  I had also checked through the number of ballots we were given and saw we only got 20 for one of the new wards.  I asked the county clerk if we didn't need more ballots for that ward.  "No," she said, "there are only 24 people in your town belonging to that ward."  The county clerk's office had been bend-over-backwards helpful on this call so I exercised more self-control than actor Will Smith.  I waited until the call ended before going into a tirade on why they would split up our town for the sake of adding 24 people to another ward.  It wasn't pretty but a good yell can be quite cathartic.
