Cup Plant

We met for volunteer training an hour before the library was due to open.  There are six of us currently plus the librarian.  The librarian started off telling us that we are the only library in our Northwoods group which has just one paid position so this library relies heavily on it's volunteers.   She had a handout and we went through procedures of how to place books in the courier bins (spine toward the center of the bin).  We talked about how patrons pay for copies - cash or check.  An app which would allow patrons to pay via their phone would cost us $50/month and we don't have enough volume to justify it.  There were a few other things and then she showed us a one page spread sheet to be filled out w/ our name at the top and a place to list book names and call numbers.  When we put a book back on the shelves she would like us to fill out the speadsheet plus leave the book a little proud of the rest of the books on the shelf.  She explained she had used this procedure where she had worked before to check that  people were reshelving books correctly.  Silence.  One of the volunteers said she didn't feel comfortable leaving books out of alighnment w/ the rest of the shelf.  I said, "We aren't doing this."  Some discussion and we agreed it might be a tool to help a new volunteer w/ shelving but the rest of us were too busy do be doing this kind of make-work.  Maybe the librarian shouldn't have emboldened us at the beginning by telling us how important we are to the running of the library.
