Fiddleheads are the furled fronds of any young fern. Now is the time to be looking for them. Some are edible like the Ostrich Plume fern and others poisonous. The Ostrich Plume fiddleheads will have a smooth stalk that has a 'U' indent similar to a celery stalk. They prefer life under the canopy of a deciduous woods in an area near wetland but not in it. Why are they called 'fiddleheads'? Because the tight curl looks like the end of a violin.
