L - Colonel

Not one of my pictures but I don't have the game anymore.  While the first 'l' in 'colonel' isn't silent, it isn't an 'l' sound either.  The term came from the Latin word 'columna' and probably referred to the person commanding columns of soldiers.  From there it morphed into Italian 'colonnello' to the French 'coronel'.  Mid 16th century it entered English as 'colonel'.  While the spelling kept the 'l', the spoken word kept the 'r' sound - a divergence between the orthographic and pronunciation which happens sometimes when the same consonant appears twice in a word.  Added plus w/ this word is I can use it again since it has a silent 'o' too.

Forgot that the library had booked a special speaker tonight that was coming in at 7:00 p.m.  I'd said I would stick around to lock up afterward so sat in on his talk about a book he edited.  It was made up of articles from a hunting/ fishing column that were published in a paper from the 1930's - 40's.  I paged through the book as he talked.  Was surprised to read which animals were scarce and which were plentiful back then.  It did make the point that everything in nature is connected - get rid of the skunks and you'll have more snapping turtles and therefore less ducks.
