Mergansers and Coyote

Storms were gone by this morning.  The day was sunny. The air brisk. Perfect for a walk.  At Gorgeous Gorge Indy and I woke up the mergansers that are resting up on their migration south.  They've been at the pond for a couple of days now and more or less ignore us.  Sat on the bench and watched them in their morning ablutions - standing up in the water, flapping their wings, preening their feathers.    Further on as we skirted between two hay fields I saw a lone coyote.  When Indy and I spook deer, they run a few steps then bounce high in the air, and sometimes do a stiff legged dance.  They are letting the rest of the herd know of the danger and at the same time showing Indy and I (the bad guys)  that they are healthy and not worth our time chasing.  Coyotes though are pack oriented and a coyote on it's own is a big scaredy-cat.  When this coyote saw our 'pack' approaching he turned tail and took off as fast as possible for the woods.  Once again, Indy and I are the Monarch's of the Glen.
