Watching the fire
Usually the town treasurer has one day in the old year where she will be at the town hall to collect property taxes in person. I prefer to go then because I can gossip w/ her. This year I paid by mail since I thought many people would want to pay before the new year because of the tax changes. However, I forgot to include Indy's rabies vaccination certificate and a self-addressed stamped envelop for the receipt and Indy's tag. I scanned in the certificate and e-mailed it to her and said I'd stop by at the town hall this a.m. while she was collecting taxes to pick up the rest. I got there early and was surprised no one was waiting so we were able to catch up on things. She asked if I remembered one volatile couple who owned land in the town but didn't live here. I didn't til she started talking about them and it all came back to me. They accused us of hiking their taxes because they didn't live here (the mil rate is the same for everyone), that none of the town's elected officials lived in the town (they all do), and tried bullying the assessor. This year they were making harassing phone calls to the treasurer. They added some threats and the treasurer said one more of those and she'd be going to the sheriff. My message to all of you paying your taxes to your local municipality's treasurer: Be Nice!
