Scrapping over final scraps
Friday was the first day for the new librarian, Diane. The former librarian had told me on Wednesday that there wasn't a volunteer for Friday afternoon so the new librarian would be totally on her own. Therefore on Friday afternoon, when I planned on mowing the lawn, instead I went down to the library to see if she needed help. The morning volunteer was still there. I offered to relieve her and she was more than happy to let me. The new librarian had brought in root beer and ice cream for anyone who wanted a float, she had a sheet for visitors to sign (just because she wanted to know who came in on her first day), and she had invited some teachers to stop in after school let out to talk about programs where the library could help them. That was on top of the usual activity of people dropping off read books and picking up new ones. Not to mention the library system courier had dropped off cartons of books that morning and they still hadn't been put away. I grabbed a root beer float and went to work. By closing time, everything was calm and in order. The librarian was happy to see the books were put away, thanked me, and asked who I was. If I'd been thinking I would have given her a fake name. Nothing more fun than messing w/ the mind of the new guy.
