Southern Argentina has a huge area networked with fossils from the Jurassic period. Recent soil erosion exposed thousands of square miles covered long ago by volcanic activity. Analysis of these types of fossils that came from sediments accumulating in the bottom of lakes, ponds, and other wetlands (called Paleolimnology) is used in understanding more recent environmental changes. Kind of an extreme "What's old is new again."
