Ragged Fringed Orchid
An active week at work. Hoofer was in on Monday. I was given a list of cows that needed to be caught for him. Before we let cows leave the parlor, I needed to climb the four steps to the level of where the cows stand and mark their heads w/ a crayon (it's as thick as my thumb and on the oily side). The older cows know what I'm up to and enjoy a little scratch but the younger cows shy away and are harder to mark. Tuesday it was up and down the stairs again. The vet comes for pregnancy checks. I've got another list of cows and I'm marking heads again so it's quicker to find the cows the vet will see. If the hoofer had to do more than a "pedicure" on Monday, he put a tight-fitting wrap around the wound so it could heal. Wednesday the bandages come off. I carefully work a scissors between the cow's leg and the bandage to cut it off. Just to make it a bit more challenging, the cow is kicking all of the while. Then Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday the herdsman told us to spray feet. Instead of cows walking through a trench of water w/ a wart suppressant in it, we take a portable sprayer and do each cow's feet individually while they are still in the parlor. Sometimes I think I like milking because it feels so good when I stop.
