Mares Tails

My beautician was telling me her light draft horse - named Snort - tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Snort came in limping from the pasture and their vet suggested she take him to a Equine Specialist Facility a few hours away. There they took a mobile x-ray unit and sonogram to make their diagnosis. Since Snort is already putting weight on the leg the prognosis is good. He has to stay in a small pen for 6 months so that he stays fairly quiet though Peggy takes him out for 15 minute walks in the morning and at night. He's on Phenylbutazone (bute) for the next month to keep the swelling down plus Peggy chills his leg in the morning and again at night. His pen is next to his other horse pals so he can touch noses w/ them and feel part of the herd. Come September, hopefully, the ACL will have grown back together. I listened intently to her story and asked a few questions. Another case of a little knowledge that you'll probably never use except to store away for context and which makes life a bit richer.
