Wild Plum Copse
I was milking w/ the herdsman and we were making great time. Unfortunately, Wednesday's are "dry-off" day. When a cow is about 6 weeks from having her calf, we dry her off and she takes a vacation from milking for awhile. To help her along, the herdsman squirts something the consistency of peanut butter in each teat to lessen the likelihood of mastitis. Then she gets a red plastic leg bracelet showing she is not to be milked. Finally, the herdsman gives her some vaccination shots. As the cows leave the milking parlor, she is shuffled off to a different area where she can spend her time off chewing her cud, sleeping, and watching the calf barn being built across the parking lot. Anyway, even though there are usually less than five cows each week to be dried off, it does slow things down. We still finished within five hours - not bad.
