Twelve-spotted Skimmer dragonfly (male)
I mowed the lawn this afternoon. Well, it's what I call a lawn. I've never planted grass or put down sod. It's basically the same stuff that grows in the pastures nearby - only mowed short. Because it's made up of native plants, I don't need to water it, fertilize it, or put chemicals on it. All I expect from this lawn is to act as a buffer between me and the ticks and to be a fire break should there ever be a wildfire. Therefore instead of trying to eradicate the bunches of orange hawkweed, birds-foot trefoil, or plantain that may pop up and flower in the middle of it, I consider them an added bonus and will mow around. It's good to be at peace w/ your lawn.
