Every other day the milk hauler comes to pick up milk out of the bulk tanks. Depending on how the cows are feeling, two days milk can fit in the big tank -or- we need to put some in the reserve tank. The process is to wait until the last cow is finished in the third group. Before we start milking the fourth group, I go into the tank room and "pump over" which pushes all of the milk in the pipeline into the tank. Then I climb the ladder on the outside of the tank, disconnect the pipeline, swing the pipe over to the other tank, climb down, climb up the second tank, and reconnect the pipe. Simple. I was pumping over when two dribbles of milk bubbled out of the top of the first tank and slid down the side. That tank was full! Milking even one more cow would have been enough to overflow the tank. I let the herdsman know - might have to start checking the big tank's remaining space earlier in the process. A problem ... but a good one for the owners to have.
