Tuesday

A cow fell in the holding pen this morning and she couldn't get up. This is a rare occurance but it does happen. Mike brought out the skid loader and the owners hooked a lifter around the hip bones of the cow. Gently Mike hoisted her rear end until her back legs were under her. As everyone knows who has read Huck Finn, a cow always gets up w/ their hind quarters first. She got her front legs underneath her and stood for awhile. The owners put hobbles on her back legs so they wouldn't splay out again, spread some sand around her so she had good traction and she took a few steps. However, she fell again. So she was put in a pen w/ a bed of sand and given a pain killer so she could be at ease. She'll get another dose tonight and hopefully (for her sake) by tomorrow getting up will be an option for her.
