A new milk tester at the dairy this morning. He, as has every tester I've met, commented on how quiet this parlor is. Other dairies have radios/music blaring during the milking. We don't. Still, to me, it is hardly quiet. I hear when cows bellow- something unusual is happening. I hear the double swish of the vacuum pump - if it turns into a single swish, we are about to lose power. I listen for milkers sucking air, stanchions clanking shut, even the sound of the utility door opening (we are about to have company). Quiet? Not to someone in tune w/ the place.
