Dad & Uncle Walter would refer to fields by the names of the people who had owned them last. It seems to be a farming tradition - as long as you own the land it is referred to by the name of someone who doesn't any longer. When you don't own it anymore, it will be known by your name. Confusing to us kids who didn't remember when the land wasn't in the family. Now that I'm older though, it feels like the proper thing to do: a small tribute to those who were caretakers of this place before us.
