Pussy willows

I could find few things green and none w/ an Irish connection today on the walk - so much for St. Patrick's day in the woods. Did notice that the pussy willows are just beginning to peek out. Various small species of willows (genus Salix) are called "pussy willows" during the time when their catkins come on in the Spring - later they are referred to by their proper names. Before they come into flower, these catkins are covered w/ a soft grey fur - like a little kitten or "pussy". Finding the first pussy willows of the year always brings a smile.
